Senior year students in the libraryIf you are in your senior high school year, you might start to feel the pressure of the whole world on your shoulder, or to say it in a less exaggerating way, just the pressure from your family and friends! It is not uncommon for senior year students to feel overwhelmed, trying to juggle their academic loads, extracurricular activities, preparations for college admissions, and at the same time still trying to enjoy the precious final year before everyone goes their own ways! The truth is, even though it's going to be busier than your junior years, it should not be that taxing and should not cost you your health and well-being! Here are a few tips to avoid stressing out in your senior year:

Start EARLY

We believe that starting your preparations early, will make you stress less and have a more balanced senior year, especially for those who plan to study abroad, apply for scholarship, etc. Jot down your thoughts, keep a story-board or diary, which might be useful for you later on when brainstorming for your personal essays. You need to realize some components of your college application such as leadership experiences and communicating your passion are not something that you can discover in a short time. They are rather things that you need to cultivate and discover over times. So, start maximizing your high school experiences early—explore and join the school clubs and social activities as a way of life and self-discovery. Do not think of joining an extracurricular activity just as a way to boost your resume. It is beyond that.

Avoid senioritis—at all cost

Senioritis is when students nearing end of their high school year starts to have lax motivations toward studies. Signs and symptoms of senioritis include missing classes,  tardiness, and lower grades. This could seriously hurt your admission chances and cause unnecessary stress at the end. Students should try their best to maintain their drive and academic performances.

Get organize—be realistic

What happens most of the time is we have the tendency to over organize and end up overwhelming ourselves with all the studying and university application processes. Try to get well organized without being over organized. Gather all the information about the majors and the universities that interest you, find out their admission requirements, and how competitive the admission is. Note them down, file them, make sure you can find them easily. Find out and mark all the important dates--such as dates of early action application, regular application, etc. Make a plan. Give yourself REALISTIC deadlines and to-do list. Have an application material checklist ready for every university that you are applying to. Organize those materials that you think will be helpful for when you need to obtain recommendation letters from your teachers. Have them ready, set a date and reminder.

Prioritize

Learn how to prioritize. It may be tough when you have to tackle school assignments, projects, extracurricular activities, and university preparations all at once. Knowing exactly the things that NEED to be done is the first step. Second, you need to put an order to all these things, based on its importance, urgency, and of course estimated effort required. Third, execute your plan, stay focused, and don't procrastinate. However, know that sometimes your priorities may change, and that life is full of uncertainties. When this happens, be flexible and adaptable.

Schedule in some personal downtime—RESET

Don't forget to make sure you also assign yourself some downtime. Embrace your time off by hanging out with your family and friends (and pets), revisiting that personal project you have been putting off, or watching your favorite TV shows. Everybody needs time to relax and reset every now and then, to make sure you can maintain your focus on your goals without getting burnt out!

Get the right SUPPORT

In this modern era, facilitated by technologies, getting support or assistance is easier than ever. You should know that it's okay to reach out and seek helps when needed. No one should fight any battles on his or her own. If you feel like you hit a road block, seek for help. It might come from friends, family members, your school teachers and advisors, or expert's guidance, especially when it comes to tackling academic hurdles, planning for and applying to universities.
