Choose major wisely with a lot of thoughts! When it comes to choosing a major, things could be tricky. Especially if you have many interests and dream jobs you want to achieve in the future. Apparently, a survey from BestColleges in 2020 finds that most college graduates would change majors if they could. You don't want this to happen, right? So make sure that you have gone through 5 key factors to consider in choosing a major. Read more to find out!
1. Goals
Ask yourself, why do you want to go to university in the first place? Is it to chase potential careers, or learning things you're skilled at in a more advanced way? Some students pursue majors based on job demand and salary potential. Others are taking it because they're passionate about and want to hone their skills in certain fields. Think about three factors: economic advantage, interest level, and ability that are most important and relevant to you!
2. Interest & Passion
Your interest and passion should be one of the first things to remember when you choose a major. It is important to have an interest in what you're studying. If not, then you will not have the motivation or drive to complete your coursework. Majoring in something you love will make studying and learning easier, and of course much more enjoyable. Now, think about things that you like. For example, if you are interested in investment, wealth management, and things related, you can consider taking a Finance or Business major.
3. Abilities
Other than thinking about things that you like, you have to also think about things that you're good at. The second factor you'll want to consider is where your talents lie. Choose major based on your abilities. This way, it'll help you to be confident to do well on your coursework. To see which academic fields best suit you is to take a close look at your grades in high school, as well as your ACT or SAT scores. By looking at this, you can take your strength and interest to pick the right major.
4. Career goals
What do you want to be when you grow up? This certainly has been going on in your mind since the beginning. It makes sense to consider what kind of job prospects you will have once you have your degree. You can ask yourself, what kind of job do you want to land? What are the major options to support you in achieving that career? Checking on the job's salary potential or what you can contribute in doing the job could also help you.
5. Coursework
Different majors require different types and loads of tasks to complete. Some majors may feel harder than others based on factors like typical homework load, course expectations, and frequency of exams. Before you pick a major, make sure to understand the workload that will be there. But remember, this shouldn't back you down from things you want to learn! Take this as a challenge that you need to pass in order to succeed. No pain, no gain, right?
