March 28, 2024, is not just another day for high school seniors everywhere. It's Ivy Day—the day when all eight Ivy League schools, some of the top colleges in the U.S., tell students if they got in or not. On Ivy Day, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Princeton, and Yale let countless students know their fate. It's a huge deal because it's the result of all the hard work, late nights, and big dreams that students have put into their applications.

The Ivy League: A Closer Look

The Ivy League is more than just a group of colleges; it's a symbol of academic excellence and history. Each of the eight Ivy League schools is a part of Ivy Day; and here is the list of schools in the Ivy League. Did you apply to any of them?

Brown University

Located in Providence, Rhode Island, Brown is known for its open curriculum, which allows students to design their own academic journey without core requirements. It's perfect for self-motivated students who love to explore different subjects.

Columbia University

Situated in the heart of New York City, Columbia offers a rigorous core curriculum that ensures all students get a well-rounded education in the liberal arts. Its urban campus gives students unbeatable access to internships, cultural experiences, and career opportunities.

Cornell University

Cornell, in Ithaca, New York, is unique for being both an Ivy League and a land-grant university, emphasizing service to the public good. It has a wide range of academic programs, from traditional liberal arts to more specialized areas like agriculture, hospitality, and labor relations.

Dartmouth College

In Hanover, New Hampshire, Dartmouth offers a close-knit community and a strong focus on undergraduate education. It's known for its flexible quarter system, called the D-Plan, which allows students to personalize their academic calendar.

Harvard University

As one of the oldest and most famous universities in the world, Harvard, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is known for its vast library system, outstanding faculty, and global alumni network. Its legacy and resources offer unparalleled opportunities in research and learning.

University of Pennsylvania (Penn)

In Philadelphia, Penn is renowned for its interdisciplinary approach, embodied in programs like the Huntsman Program in International Studies and Business, which allows you to graduate with a double degree. It's also home to the first business school and medical school in the United States.

Princeton University

Princeton, situated in the quiet town of Princeton, New Jersey, emphasizes undergraduate research. It's famous for its senior thesis requirement and offers generous financial aid, ensuring that education is accessible to all.

Yale University

Located in New Haven, Connecticut, Yale boasts a stunning campus, a world-class faculty, and a commitment to undergraduate teaching. It's known for its strong arts programs, residential college system, and the Yale Bulldogs' spirited presence in college athletics.

After Ivy Day Decisions: Next Steps

Once Ivy Day has come and gone, you'll find yourself with a decision to make, whether you're celebrating an acceptance, contemplating your next move from a waitlist position, or reflecting on a rejection. Here's how you can navigate each of these outcomes:

For Acceptances: Choosing Between Ivies

If you get accepted into more than one Ivy League school during Ivy Day, it is an incredible achievement, but it also means you have a tough decision ahead. Consider these factors to help you choose:

  • Financial Aid: Compare the financial aid packages from each school. An Ivy education is valuable, but so is graduating with minimal debt.

  • Program Strengths: Look into how strong each school is in your intended major or area of interest. Specific programs can vary significantly in quality and opportunities.

  • Campus Culture: Each Ivy has its own vibe. Think about where you'll fit in best. Consider visiting campuses, if possible, to get a sense of the student life and community.

  • Location and Resources: Consider the location and what it offers in terms of internships, job opportunities, and cultural experiences. Also, think about each school's resources, like libraries, labs, and extracurriculars.

For Waitlists: Improving Your Chances

Being on the waitlist isn't the end of the road. Here are steps to potentially improve your chances:

  • Express Continued Interest: Write a letter to the admissions office stating that the school is still your top choice and you would definitely attend if accepted.

  • Update Your Application: Share any new achievements, awards, or grades that have come up since you applied.

  • Get Another Recommendation: A new letter of recommendation from someone who knows you well can also help your case.

For Rejections: Moving Forward

A rejection can be tough, but it's not the end of your journey. Remember:

  • It's Not Personal: Admissions decisions are about finding the right fit between a student and a school. It's not a reflection of your worth or potential.

  • Explore Other Options: Many universities offer excellent education and opportunities. Look into other schools where you've been accepted, or consider community college as a stepping stone.

  • Take a Gap Year: If you're set on an Ivy or another highly selective school, taking a gap year to work, volunteer, or pursue a project can strengthen your application if you decide to reapply.

No matter the outcome, remember that your college decision is just one step in your larger journey. There are countless paths to success, happiness, and fulfillment, and sometimes the unexpected ones are the most rewarding.
