Founded in 1911 in the wake of the anti-colonialist Boxer Rebellion, Tsinghua University is considered as the first educational institution of the People's Republic of China. The main campus of Tsinghua University is situated in northwest Beijing on 980 acres of land that was formerly part of the Qing Dynasty royal gardens. Also, its campus, which is surrounded by lakes and greenery, is situated between Peking University and Wudaokou.
The university is one of the founding members of the C9 League (an association of nine Chinese universities), Tsinghua University has 20 schools and 57 departments that cover a wide range of subjects. Moreover, at Tsinghua University, students can study anything they have an interest in, from science, engineering, social sciences, arts, and literature, to medicine.
Across its diverse fields of study and programs, Tsinghua University has a little over 36,000 students enrolled. Out of these, over 15,500 are pursuing undergraduate studies and about 19,300 are postgraduate students.

As Tsinghua University has long been famous for being the number 1 school for every Chinese student, it has one of the most competitive university admissions in the world. Furthermore, due to the sheer number of students applying to Tsinghua for bachelor's programs, its acceptance rate is less than 2% for domestic students.
On the other hand, due to the school's close tie with the United States, Tsinghua is far more open to international students. As long as they meet the entry requirements of the program they are applying for, the acceptance rate for international students is over 28%.
Tsinghua University divides each academic year into three semesters: spring, autumn, and summer. Currently, Tsinghua offers 87 undergraduate majors in addition to 41 minor degree programs.
