UCAS Personal Statement - What and How to Write ?It

UCAS stands for Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, a centralized service for students to apply for undergraduate programs to the universities in the UK. To apply through UCAS, there is one important requirement you need to work on -- UCAS Personal Statement. It's got to be at least 1,000 characters long – but you have up to 4,000 characters/47 lines –. In this personal statement, you can write what you want to tell the universities why you'd like to study with them, and what skills and experience you have.

What to write

What you need to write on your UCAS Personal statement is YOU. Remember that you can only write one personal statement in your UCAS application. That's why you have to avoid naming specific university names. If you're planning on applying to similar subjects, try not to mention course titles and write about the subject in general. 

There are three main things you need to remember to write: your qualities, your goal, and your suitability.

1. Your Qualities 

Take a look at the course description thoroughly, and the requirements to enroll in one. You can identify the qualities, skills, and experiences that are needed to decide on what to write about.

2. Your Goal

Explain the reason why you're applying. Tell the readers of your ambitions, future goals, and what you will do after you get the degree that you intended. Don't forget to talk about your interests about the subject, course provider, and higher education.

3. Your Suitability

Check yourself, think about what makes you worthy to study the major in your intended university. You can tell your relevant experience, skills, or achievement that you've gained from work, previous education, or other activities.

Here are the additional points that you can add to your personal statement:

• Clubs or communities that you're engaged into and the field area of it.
• Internships, full or part time jobs, or volunteering projects that you have done.
• Academic-related activities such as summer school or courses that you completed.
• If you've developed skills through Duke of Edinburgh, ASDAN, National Citizen Service, the Crest Awards scheme, or young enterprise.

How to write

There is no definite format when it comes to writing a personal statement. Your UCAS personal statement should be unique, personal and resonate with you. 

However, there are some tips and tricks you can take when writing one. 

1. Don't write things too complex. Write in an enthusiastic, concise, and natural style.
2. Don't be too rigid and strict, but be careful with humour, quotes, or anything unusual. Not everybody has the same sense of humour as you, including the admissions team.
3. Use the course detail or description to help you structure your writing. Reflect your skills and qualities that are needed or required by the universities or major that you're applying to.
4. Always check on the character and line limit. 
5. Proofread your writing, check the spelling, punctuation, and grammar. You can get help from your teachers, family, or mentors from ALL-in to check and give advice!

UCAS is recommending you to write your personal statement first in other software, then copy and paste it into your online application once you're done. As the portal times out after 35 minutes of inactivity, make sure you save the personal statement regularly.
