UCLA is one of the most popular universities in the world and it is also well-known for providing a great education. Therefore, it is placed in a desirable location and it has a large number of international students, which makes it an attractive study destination for a lot of international students like you. In this article, we will help you to understand all the aspects of UCLA you need to know, starting with majors, applications, and acceptance rate.

What is UCLA?

The University of California, Los Angeles is a public research university in Los Angeles, California. UCLA's academic roots started back in 1882 when it was originally founded as the southern branch of the California State Normal School. Moreover, UCLA is one of nine public undergraduate campuses across the state, from the Bay Area down to San Diego. Also, according to USnews, The University of California—Los Angeles has ranked #20 in National Universities in the Best Colleges 2022 edition.

What majors are UCLA known for?

With a total enrollment of 31,543 undergraduate students, UCLA offers 125 undergraduate majors spread across 109 academic departments and over 90 minors. Therefore, you can say that UCLA is one of the best universities out there and a favorite for students around the world.

Here are some of the most popular undergraduate majors at UCLA:

Biology

UCLA's Biology program is part of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB), which aims for students who would like to obtain a broad knowledge of science as well as for students preparing for careers in the health sciences, biotechnology or other adjacent fields.

Economics

At UCLA, the Economics program is focused on the systematic study of production, conservation, and allocation of resources in the condition of scarcity, along with the organizational frameworks related to these processes. Furthermore, through the Economics program, students are taught to use research-based skills to understand how limited resources can be allocated in a way that best serves a business or organization.

Psychology

UCLA's Psychology department is known for its in-depth focus on the study of individual and collective behaviour. Not only that, but the department also covers the effect of physical and environmental influences on behaviour. In addition to the breadth of knowledge that students gain, the Psychology program at UCLA offers the UCLA Psychology Research Opportunity Programs initiative, which enriches their learning experience with hands-on research.

Political Science and Government

The UCLA Department of Political Science mainly focuses on the systematic study of political studies and behaviour. Furthermore, through its undergraduate programs, the department offers a variety of courses in American politics, comparative politics, international relations, political theory and public policy.

UCLA Acceptance Rate

When you're applying to universities, there are a lot of numbers to consider. In addition, one of the first things to look at is the acceptance rate. Although it isn't everything, it's a good general rule of thumb when comparing schools.

UCLA's acceptance rate is usually about 14 %. However, only 15,028 students got accepted into the Class of 2025 from a total of 139,490 applicants. In addition, this brings the UCLA acceptance rate for the 2021/2022 admission cycle down to only 11 %.

However, you should know that the UCLA acceptance rate depends on the number of applicants for each incoming class. That means that, while the number of accepted students may remain constant over time, the acceptance rate will vary based on the number of applicants.

How to apply to UCLA

UCLA, along with eight other public institutions in California, is part of the University of California (UC) system. So if you are planning to apply to UCLA, you will need to fill out the UC Application—a universal application used to apply to all nine UC campuses.

UCLA has the same application deadlines as other UC schools:

Date Application Status
August 1 UC Application Opens
October 1 - November 30  Admission application filing period
Late March - Early April  Admissions decisions for first-year students

Obviously, there are many factors that go into choosing a college: the curriculum, the location, and the whole university experience. But to come up with a balanced university list, you want to research deeper: into the major and the universities' acceptance rate. Moreover, these two aspects are going to play a big role in your decision process. Hopefully, you will find this useful for you to decide if you want to go to UCLA.
