Columbia University Rankings: The New-York Based Ivy League University

On top of its well regarded education, Columbia is known as one of the most selective Ivy League schools. So, are you planning to study there? Columbia University, at a glance 

The founding of King's College in 1754 by the royal charter of George II of Great Britain marked the beginning of Columbia. Later, in 1784, it adopted the name Columbia College. Since then, Columbia has grown into a highly prestigious university.

Currently, there are three undergraduate schools in Columbia, which includes The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, Columbia College, and the School of General Studies. Columbia is also made up of several graduate and professional schools, including the highly ranked Business School, Teachers College, and College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Columbia University Rankings

When it comes to the Columbia University rankings, it stands 7th in the United States and 22nd globally according to the latest QS World University Rankings. 

Here are a few of the Columbia subjects, according to the QS World University Rankings by subjects, that are among the top 15 worldwide:

  • Arts and Humanities - 7th 
  • Law and Legal Studies - 8th 
  • English Language and Literature - 9th 
  • Economics and Econometrics - 12th
  • Mathematics - 15th 
  • Psychology - 12th 

Applying to Columbia University

Being an Ivy League school, Columbia is known for having a low acceptance rate. In the latest undergraduate admissions cycle, the university accepted less than 4% of its applicants! Moreover, below is the table showing Columbia's recent undergraduate admissions statistics:

If you're planning to apply to Columbia, there are three application systems that Columbia accepts:

  • The Coalition Application
  • The Common Application
  • The QuestBridge Application from QuestBridge Finalists

You will have to pay a non-refundable $85 fee for your Columbia application. Here are several requirements you need to submit when applying to Columbia University: 

  • Supplemental essays 
  • High school transcripts 
  • Standardized test scores
  • Columbia-specific application questions
  • English proficiency test scores
  • Teacher recommendations
  • Supplementary materials (if applicable)

The following shows the minimum score required for the English Language Proficiency tests:

There are two application deadlines for undergraduate admission at Columbia:

Admissions essays to get into Columbia

To get a more holistic view of applicants, you will also need to respond to Columbia-specific questions. In your essays, you can go into greater detail about your academic and extracurricular interests. As an applicant, you can also express why you are the perfect candidate for Columbia and how you can contribute to the Columbia community.

Here are some sample prompts of Columbia's supplemental essays:

  • A hallmark of the Columbia experience is being able to learn and live in a community with a wide range of perspectives. How do you or would you learn from and contribute to diverse, collaborative communities? (200 words or fewer)
  • List the titles of the required readings from academic courses that you enjoyed most during secondary/high school. (75 words or fewer)
  • Why are you interested in attending Columbia University? We encourage you to consider the aspect(s) that you find unique and compelling about Columbia. (200 words or fewer)
  • Please tell us what from your current and past experiences (either academic or personal) attracts you specifically to the areas of study that you noted in the application. (200 words or fewer)
