History of Stanford Medical School

The Stanford University School of Medicine got its start back in 1858, when Dr. Elias S. Cooper founded the Medical Department of the University of the Pacific, which is the first medical school on the Pacific Coast. In 1908, Stanford acquired the medical institution, which was then known as Cooper Medical College. Furthermore, in 1959, the medical school relocated to the Stanford main campus in Palo Alto, California.

There are several degree programs offered by Stanford Medical School: 

• MD program: Stanford's MD Discovery Curriculum offers an interdisciplinary approach, combining basic science and clinical instructions throughout the curriculum. Therefore, students can choose to complete their work in two or three years, allowing for more flexibility to pursue and explore various facets of the medical profession.
• MD/PhD program: A combined program designed for students who plan on pursuing a career in academic investigative medicine. Upon graduation, students will obtain a dual degree in both medicine and research. On average, the program lasts 7-8 years. 
• MSM (Master's of Science in Medicine): A program designed for students who want to pursue a career in translational research. Furthermore, the research is aiming to produce applicable results that directly benefit human health.
• MD/MPH: A program for students who want to explore larger trends in medicine and how they impact communities around the globe.
• MD/MS: ?A program designed for students to specialize even further in a variety of specialized sciences, including Health Policy, Epidemiology, Biomedical Informatics, Biomedical Investigation, and Biomechanical Engineering.
• MD/MBA: A five-year joint program combining medical and business training. 
• MD/JD: A six-year combined degree designed for students who want an in-depth understanding of the legal issues that often arise around medicine. 
• MD/MPP: A joint degree designed for students who are looking to go into medical policy.

Stanford Medical School Acceptance Rate

In the US News rankings of top medical schools for research, Stanford came in 7th position. Moreover, as one of the top medical schools in the United States, Stanford Medical School's acceptance rate is extremely low. In the 2021 admissions cycle, the school's acceptance rate was only 2.2%.

When it comes to their academic curriculum, Stanford Medical School uses the flipped classroom model. Therefore, with this model, students watch lectures and read academic materials outside of school. Furthermore, classroom time is for discussion, problem-solving, and other interactive learning methods where students can collaborate with their peers and use their teachers as guides.

Lori Alvord 

Dr. Alvord earned her M.D. from Stanford Medical School in 1985, where she later earned her board certification as a surgeon in 1994. In 1992, Dr. Alvord was the recipient of the Governor's Award for Outstanding New Mexico Women, from the former governor of New Mexico, Bruce King. Moreover, Her autobiography, The Scalpel, and the Silver Bear, which was published in 1999, has brought increased attention to her career as a surgeon and has sold over 50,000 copies worldwide.

John C. Baldwin

Dr. Baldwin started his career as a cardiothoracic surgeon after finishing medical school at Stanford. He then completed both medical and surgical residencies at Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by a return to Stanford for his training in cardiothoracic surgery. In 2011, President Obama appointed Baldwin to serve on the U.S. Defense Health Board.

Even with a history stretching over a century, Stanford retains its reputation as an extremely prestigious organization, and thousands of other applicants are vying to obtain this excellent opportunity.
