Whether it's building homes, coding, or teaching homeless children — there's always something for you to do to give back. However, with plenty of volunteering opportunities out there, it can be overwhelming to figure out which one best suits your personality, interests and values. Let's explore the different types of volunteering work you can do!

Types of volunteering work

Some of the most common types of volunteering work fall into Environment, Animals, Education, dan Healthcare.

Under these areas, you can find a variety of volunteer activities and organizations you can get involved in. While volunteering is usually linked with in-person activities, the pandemic has opened a new world of volunteerism: virtual volunteering. Furthermore, Virtual volunteering involves using technology to volunteer for an organization or cause from the comfort of your home.

Environment

With the effects of climate change becoming more visible around the world - melting ice caps, extreme weather and dying ecosystems - there's never been a more important time to get involved. Moreover, you can join environmental groups to raise awareness of the impacts of climate change on social media, participate in weekly climate strikes, or help to create political change.

Animals

Whether it's saving stray animals or victims of animal abuse and natural disasters, you'll assist in the care of dogs, cats, and other animals. Feeding animals, dog walking, and cage cleaning are just a few of the responsibilities.

Education

In underdeveloped cities, where there may be disparities in access to education, you can pave the way for young children to have a better life. By volunteering as a teacher, you'll be responsible for teaching classes, developing curricula, assigning tasks to students, as well as grading students' performance.

Healthcare

Hospitals and clinics facing difficulties in keeping track of their patients' insurance, history, and billing information. Therefore, you may be in charge of digitally organizing medical records. In addition to learning medical terminologies, you'll also get to develop highly sought-after data entry skills.

Aside from that, you can also organize workshops, where you raise awareness on issues such as HIV/AIDS, or the importance of exercising.

What you should know before starting a volunteering work

Before jumping into volunteering, you should first figure out the volunteering work that suits you best. After all, volunteering can be a really fulfilling experience when it's done right. Here's what you can do:

  • Understand your goals and expectations. With numerous volunteering opportunities, step back and ask yourself what you want to get out of volunteering. Do you want to improve the lives of your local neighborhood? Or perhaps you'd like to improve your communication skills?
  • Know your skills. Therefore, ask yourself in what ways can you offer yourself? Just like knowing what you get, knowing what you give helps you narrow down the volunteer opportunities that would be a good fit for you.
