The University of California is one of the most popular research university systems in the world, located in the state of California. It is composed of numerous campuses located in multiple different locations such as Berkley, Riverside, and Los Angeles. Also, most of these schools are considered public Ivies. UC Davis, which stands for the University of California, Davis, is one of them.

History of UC Davis

UC Davis, the seventh campus of the 10 campuses of the University of California, is located in the city of Davis, close to the Northern California region. It was first founded as an agricultural branch of the university system in 1905 before it became one of the ten campuses of the University of California 54 years later in 1959.

Around the 19th century, Eugene W. Hilgard, a German-American professor of agriculture, recognize that UC Berkeley's soil and climate were terrible for farming. Moreover, at the turn of the 20th century, Peter J Shields, the secretary of the California Agricultural Society, proposed the idea of a university farm. Later, he was honored as the “founder” of UC Davis in 1962.

Academics and Colleges

UC Davis has around 100 undergraduate majors and graduate programs respectively. Among them, UC Davis is famous for its outstanding biological and agricultural sciences programs, such as its top-rated Agricultural and Resource Economics programs and the large Department of Animal Science.

The undergraduate majors are divided into four colleges:

  • Agricultural and Environmental Sciences
  • Biological Sciences
  • Engineering
  • Letters and Science

The university is a Public Ivy and was on the same spot for the 10th-best public university in the United States, 38th nationally, and 67th globally, according to the U.S. News & World Report in 2022.

UC Davis was popular for being more “selective” with its applicants. Moreover, in the fall of 2019, UC Davis received about 78,000 freshmen applications and only admits about 30,350 of them. Furthermore, almost 6,000 students enrolled in the school in total. The average high school grade point average (GPA) of the student was 4.13 while the average SAT scores were between 610 and 710 for reading and 630–790 for math, and 28–34 for the ACT Composite score.

UC Davis also offers 90 post-graduate programs, including master's and doctoral degrees and post-doctoral courses. Some of those include:

  • UC Davis Graduate Studies
  • School of Education
  • School of Law
  • Graduate School of Management
  • School of Medicine
  • School of Veterinary Medicine
  • Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing

Faculty and Research

UC Davis is a part of the Association of American Universities, which is an organization with dedication in maintaining a strong system for research and education. UC Davis has also spent almost $800 million dollars on their research facilities. As a result, UC Davis has numerous research centers and laboratories devoted to this cause. Some of these research facilities include:

  • Advanced Highway Maintenance Construction Technology Research Laboratory
  • Bodega Marine Reserve
  • C-STEM Center
  • CalEPR Center
