Established in 1911, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) traces its origins back to 1887, when the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese was founded. The school initially began as an all-male institution, but it began admitting female students in 1921.

Since its founding as the oldest tertiary institution in Hong Kong, the University of Hong Kong has grown into one of Asia's leading universities with more than 29,000 students. As of the latest QS University Rankings, the University of Hong Kong ranks 22nd internationally and 3rd in Asia. 

Today, the University of Hong Kong has 10 academic faculties with English as the main language of instruction. Moreover, this includes dentistry, linguistics, education, political science, humanities, economics, law, business administration, biomedicine, and architecture. 

University of Hong Kong Acceptance Rate

It is estimated that the University of Hong Kong's acceptance rate is about 37%, which is taken from the 2019/2020 admission cycle. 

You should know that the University of Hong Kong acceptance rate may vary year by year because it depends on the number of applicants for every admission cycle. In other words, while they may accept the same number of students each year, they will have a higher acceptance rate when there are fewer applicants and a lower acceptance rate when there are more applicants.

How to apply to the University of Hong Kong

If you're planning to apply to the University of Hong Kong, your application is done online via the official university website, with an application fee of HKD300. Here are several supporting documents needed as part of the application process:

  • Personal statement
  • High school transcript
  • CV, certificates, and awards
  • Certificates of public examinations and proof of English language proficiency
  • Reference letter(s)
