With its high living standards, attractive career and research prospects, and laid-back nature, it's no surprise that Australia has attracted more than half a million international students. Therefore If you're planning to be the next student to study in the country, make sure to know about the requirements to study in Australia. Let's find out!

English Proficiency

As English is widely spoken in Australia and is the primary language medium in most Australian higher education institutions, you'll be required to submit proof of English language proficiency. Also, this is the case if you're not taking international qualifications in high school. Moreover, here are the following English proficiency tests that are accepted in most Australian higher education institutions:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language: internet-based (TOEFL iBT)
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced
  • Cambridge C2 Proficiency

Complete secondary school overseas

Initially, One of the requirements to study in Australia includes completing secondary school in your home country or somewhere outside Australia.

In addition, The International Baccalaureate (IB), GCE A-Levels, and the Advanced International Certificate of Education are a few international qualifications recognized by Australian higher education institutions.

For the IB Diploma Programme, you can find IB diploma scores that have been converted into an Australian Tertiary Entrance Rank (ATAR) value from the Australasian Conference of Tertiary Admissions Centres (ACTAC) below:

Overall IB scores ATAR
45 99.95
44 99.75
43 99.45
42 99.10
41 98.55
40 97.90
39 97.10
38 96.25
37 95.20
36 93.90
35 92.60

28 79.85
27 77.60
26 75.35
25 72.70
24 70.20

Although the table only applies to IB students who will begin their tertiary study in 2022, hopefully, it will give you a better picture of the score conversion! For 2023 admissions, a new conversion schedule for IB scores will be introduced.

Remember to check whether the institution you're planning to apply to recognizes your completed overseas secondary school qualification. Also, the international qualifications recognized may vary across Australian higher education institutions.

What if I don't meet the requirements to study in Australia?

If your qualification is not recognized, there are a few ways that you can do to meet the entry requirements. This includes:

  • Finishing one year of university study in your home country
  • Obtaining a diploma in Australia or your home country
  • Completing a recognized foundation course in Australia
